talking IPods

Hi, If there's another topic similar to this on another thread, my apology. What version of the Ipod comes with speech on it, and wht Gigs are available. A;lso, do any of the models come with an FM tuner? Finally, Has anyone had any luck downloading music from Amazon or other sites? I hate ITunes, so if I get an IPod, I'd like to use Amazon or Walmart if possible. Also, can anyone give me a general price range for the Ipod models with speech? I'd consider getting a refurbished one, if possible. Thanks!

Well there's the IPod Nano, which I've never used and therefore don't know which models have speech. Then there's the IPod Touch, but only the third generation 32 and 64-gig models have Voiceover, the screen reader. I've had my 32-GB Touch for about two or three weeks and, though it is definitely taking a bit of getting used to I've fallen completely and totally in love with it LOL. Unfortunately though, you have to use ITunes, at least in order to transfer your music to and from the IPod itself. In fact to delete music you no longer want on there you have to delete the songs from the ITunes Library first, then connect your IPod and let it sync with the computer. And you have to make sure that any music you want on the IPod has been added to the ITunes Library, but I've discovered that that's actually reasonably easy to do, at least with Window-Eyes. Not sure about JFW since I don't use that anymore. But while you might be able to download music from WalMart or Amazon, you do have to use ITunes to actually transfer it to the IPod. I personally feel it should be like any other storage device where you connect it and just copy and paste what files you want, then the device itself could automatically handle any necessary format conversion. Alas, however, that isn't how it works.

Thanks for this info, yeah, that would be nice. I like just plugging my mp3 player in and syncing my music. I'll think about an IPoD though.

The current generations of shuffle, and nano all models speak. the previous generation does to some extent as well, and often on the apple site the refurb is 30 to 40 % off.

You can use a plugin with foobar 2000 to transfer music to the ipod from your foobar 2000 library. While this requires you install itunes to get all the proper drivers I find that using foobar 2000 to transfer music is a much better experience then using itunes, since the interface isn't horrible and transfering music doesn't bring your computer to a grinding hault.

I use Xplay which is another program that lets you copy and paste music onto your Ipod. It's pretty nice. The only thing with Amazon is that you have to be careful because they want you to download their player which is inaccessible, so it looks like you would have to manually download each song one at a time.

I find that using Itunes with Jaws is relatively easy. I can search through the store, download songs, etc. with no problem.

Oh, I just figured out how to use Itunes without using Xplay. It's very easy. First of all, I am running Jaws 11 and Itunes 9. Just so you guys know.:) When I want to put songs on my Ipod (I do them by artist), I simply plug in my device to my computer, create a new playlist on my Ipod, and then, past the songs I want into that empty playlist. It's really easy to do. I just did it with my Ipod touch an hour ago.:)

Are Shuffle and Nanno obsolete? or are new versions of these players available? My friend is visiting from out of State, and she showed me her IPod that has a touch screen. I wasn't impressed. If newer versions of non touch-screen players are available, I might consider one.

Dude, the Ipod touch is awesome! I got mine Friday and it's really easy to learn. The nano and the shuffle don't hold that much music. I think the shuffle only goes to 2 gig and the nano goes to 16 gigs.

I disagree about the IPod touch being easy to learn, but I guess it's a matter of personal preference. I got to take a look at one a couple weeks ago, and I just don't understand the point of poking and prodding at a screen to accomplish something buttons would do just fine.

Oh OK, I bought mine on Friday and in like 20 minutes or less, it had it working quite nicely. It's all about know where things generally are on the screen. I think if I had vission, I'd be good at things like geometry and things like that. LOL I thought learning the Ipod touch would be hard, but to me, it was a piece of cake. Now all I have to learn is how to type on the thing.

I love my ITouch, i can navigate on it in some cases quicker than my sighted brother even if the commands for blind users are slightly different. Yes typing is tricky at first, but if you can learn it, away you go

That's my next thing I want 2 learn. Also, if you have too many artists on your Ipod, how do you go to the rest. OK Like I have like 10 artists on my Ipod right now. When I got into the artists page, Rascal Flatts and Rihanna do not show up. I know they are on there, but how do I get to them? LOL

@11 you only looked at one though.

Its a hole different way of interacting with a device, so what makes you think you'll be so good at it streight away? Were you an expert computer user after about 10 minutes? No, I didn't think so.

As far as navigation goes, I find that once you know the layout of the app that your using, it can be faster than a convential screenreader keyboard combination.

I quite like the ipod nano, but don't like the fact that it only has up to 16 gb of space. I like both the ipod touch and the nano and don't mind that the first has a touch screen. Voiceover works fine with the ipod touch and with the 4th and 5th generations of the nano.

What I like to do when I've got more than, let's say ten artists on my IPod Touch is to use a one-finger flicking motion to the left or right depending on which direction I want to go. It's easier for me than trying to navigate any other way. And this is true of other menus as well, not just for the music section.

ipod nano, 4th gen 16 gig. and i love it... i don't think i'll ever get more then 2000 songs which is 8 gig on there, but yeah... the ipod touch is mostly used for the apps from what i know. but the nano is really easy to use.

using itunes 8 and jaws 10... will have jaws 11 soon though, can't wait.

Actually I use my IPod Touch more for the audiobooks and music more than I do for the other aps. I'm not saying i never use them but they weren't the main reason I got the thing. And I'll probably be the same way when I get the IPhone, which will probably be sometime in December since if I'm not mistaken that's when my next time to upgrade will be.
